If you drive into the back of another vehicle, it is your fault. (unless you can prove otherwise, rare.) Avoid being at fault and keep your distance.
My car has particularly sharp brakes. If I need to slam them on for whatever reason, my car will stop dead almost instantly. Older cars can take double the distance to stop. Know your brakes. Know your car. If in doubt, leave as much space in front of you as can.
